Better health for seniors

Health & Wellbeing

Remember the days when our parents or other adults told us to eat everything on our plate before we could leave the table? Those lessons are ingrained in most people’s memory so it can be challenging as we move through different life stages to adjust or change those habits.

The Better Health website offers valuable information to help us understand our changing nutritional needs as we age and reinforces the message that maintaining a healthy diet benefits us physically, mentally, and socially.

In simple terms, they recommend that older people:

    • Increase your intake of nutrient rich foods, especially foods high in protein, fibre, calcium and good fats
    • Decrease your calories and your serving size, especially if your physical activity is low
    • Limit sugary, salty, fatty foods and junk food
    • Drink less alcohol or soft drinks and drink plenty of water
    • Be physically active, within your own personal limitations

However, we know that eating well is often not as simple as it sounds, and many of our participants have chronic illnesses, medical conditions, physical impairments, dental issues, low incomes or other psycho-social challenges that can make healthy eating difficult. Additionally, some find that eating alone can diminish the enjoyment of their meals.

We can assist you to get the balanced nutrition you need by arranging a nutritional consultation with a dietitian who can create a personalised eating program tailored to your needs.

With appropriate service approvals, your quarterly budget can also help with your grocery shopping, preparing or purchasing suitable meals, exercise programs, social events, and even provide a support worker to accompany you on walks or help you during mealtime.

Please get in touch if you would like to explore ways to improve your diet and physical activity.
