Health Spotlight: Fluid retention (Oedema)
If you’ve ever noticed puffiness or swelling of your skin, or skin that looks or feels shiny or tight, you might be experiencing Fluid Retention, also known as oedema. This is a common problem as we age, as the lymphatic system slows down resulting in parts of your body swelling due to a build-up of trapped fluid.
The most common areas to be affected are the lower legs, ankles or feet, and, if left untreated, it can increase the risk of infection, skin ulcers and falls. Oedema can also be a sign of more serious health issues such as heart, kidney or liver failure.
- Some of the key risk factors for older people include:
- Lack of physical activity, prolonged sitting or standing
- Eating too much salty food
- Obesity and poor circulation
- Certain medications, such as blood pressure or diabetes medications, antidepressants, hormone therapy and steroids
It’s important to seek medical attention and advice as soon as you notice the symptoms, especially if the swelling comes on quickly, if it’s isolated to just one leg or if you feel breathless.
A medical professional can prescribe the most appropriate treatment for you once they have determined the cause of your oedema. You can help to reduce the risk and treat the symptoms of oedema, by elevating your legs, modifying your diet, gentle exercises, staying hydrated, moisturising your skin, and using compression garments.
With the appropriate service approvals, you can use your quarterly budget for transportation to medical appointments, or we can coordinate a visit from a Registered Nurse for a comprehensive health consultation at home.
