Living with low blood pressure

Health & Wellbeing

Many hospital admissions for individuals aged over 75 are linked to low blood
pressure, especially the type known as 'postural hypotension.'

According to Australia’s HealthDirect website, the symptoms of low blood
pressure may include light-headedness or dizziness, weakness, blurry vision,
pale and clammy skin, fatigue, confusion and fainting.

These symptoms can occur when you are doing nothing, but they are more
likely to occur when changing position, such as standing up or turning your
head quickly, and even when straining on the toilet.

If low blood pressure impacts your day-to-day life, you may be able to use your
package funds for:

    • A range of assessments and professional recommendations to address your age-related hypotension
    • Simple home adjustments or modifications, i.e. grab rails, sensor night
      lighting, removal of floor rugs
    • Assistive technology (aids & equipment), i.e. wheelie walker, kitchen chair,
bedside commode, electric lift recliner, falls detection technologies
    • Assisted meal preparation or prepared meal delivery
    • Personal care support or discreet personal care supervision

We always recommend you get a formal diagnosis and advice from your GP,
however, some ways to help reduce the effects of hypotension include getting
up slowly, having something to hold on to when you stand up, wearing compression stockings, staying well-hydrated, eating small meals, and light exercise.

Please get in touch with us to discuss any concerns you have about the symptoms or effects of hypotension.

We will work with you to identify key risks that relate to your hypotension and direct your package funds where they are most needed.
