Your right to refuse care

Education & Resources

It is important that all our participants to understand their rights regarding the decisions and choices they make about the care and services they receive. This includes the right to decline or refuse any care or services that are offered to them.

We fully respect your right to decline services; however, we also have responsibilities in this matter. We must ensure that you have all the relevant information to make informed choices or decisions, that you are actively involved in the decision-making process if someone else is representing you, and that you are aware of any potential risks or consequences for yourself and/or others.

It’s normal to be hesitant about accepting some support or advice, so if you, or a family member on your behalf, choose to decline a recommended service, we will help you explore your options and may suggest the following approaches:

    • Start Small: Consider implementing changes in smaller, manageable steps to help you gradually adjust to something new
    • Look at the Bigger Picture: Reflect on whether other underlying concerns or issues are contributing to your decision to refuse certain types of care services
    • Reframe the Conversation: Take some time to think about the situation from various perspectives. Consider how your choice to accept or decline certain supports might affect others
    • Pause and Reflect: If you feel overwhelmed or pressured, it’s okay to take a break. We can schedule another conversation later to revisit the issue with a fresh outlook
    • Seek a Professional Opinion: Think about consulting a professional or someone significant in your life for advice and insight

We are here to support you in navigating your choices about care and services, so please feel free to reach out to us if you are feeling reluctant to accept any recommended care or support.
